The Paul R. Pingaro Scholarship Rarely in life do you meet a person who has had such a profound influence on so many people. Paul Pingaro was one such person. East Boston has suffered a great loss in his passing. The Paris Street Gym was Paul's home and he made it feel like home to anyone who walked through its door. He loved life, he loved people, and he loved East Boston. For over 28 years, he worked with the youth of East Boston, treating them with fairness, compassion, and humor. The elderly who attended the programs at the gym will remember the kindness and gentleness he showed them. To the staff he was a true and loyal friend and they will hold his spirit in their hearts. In Paul they knew they had someone they could depend on and trust. Paul treated every person as if they were special. Their problems were his problems, their joys were his joys, and their sadness was his sadness. He will be long remembered, sadly missed, and forever loved. After Paul R Pingaro's sudden death in 1997 a scholarship fund was established in his honor. Every year since two $500.00 scholarships have been award to graduating high school seniors, who are residents of East Boston.
